The City of Bratislava

Bratislava is, with about 420.000 inhabitants the capital and biggest city of Slovakia. Bratislava borders on Austria and Hungary and is thus the only capital around the world, which borders to more than one country. Especially the close vicinity to these two countries makes it a very interesting city, because you can visit many different places, not only in Slovakia, but also in Austria, Hungary and maybe even the Czech Republic. The Austrian border is only 5 kilometers away from the city center. The Austrian capital Vienna is only about 55 kilometers away from Bratislava. Together these two cities are named “Twin City”, because they are forming the center of the Europaregion “Centrope”.

Bratislava is the economic, cultural and political center of the country, beyond that the seat of the government of Slovakia and the location of many museums, theaters and universities. Furthermore, there are many economic, cultural and scientific institutions in Bratislava.

The city of Bratislava offers many natural green spaces, so that you will feel very   comfortable with many possibilities of retreat alongside the everyday life. The Danube flows through the picturesque city from west to southeast. Most of the sights, among them many historical buildings, can be found in the historical downtown (Staré Mesto). One of the landmarks of the city – the impressive Bratislava Castle – can be found in the western historical downtown.

Bratislava is being visited by many tourists and medical tourists from all over the world each year and is the headquarters of many universities, among them the Comenius University, which is the biggest one in Slovakia and has been opened in 1919.
